Releasing funds during basic Escrow domain sale

Hi guys. When selling a domain using NP landers & Escrow.com, when does the buyer typically release the funds — when the auth code is received & transfer started? Or, is it customary to wait for the transfer to complete?

I’m new to this and afraid I could end up without my domain or payment for it. In the future, I will direct buyer to my Atom WLM or something. Thanks.
