DALLAS, TX – Last month, Omni Hotels & Resorts, a prominent hotel chain, experienced a cybersecurity breach that resulted in the theft of customer information. In an update on their website, Omni confirmed that the stolen data includes customer names, email addresses, postal addresses, and guest loyalty program information. However, financial information and Social Security numbers were not compromised.
The breach was detected on March 29, prompting Omni to shut down its systems. During this time, guests encountered various issues such as outages in phone and Wi-Fi services, as well as problems with their room keys. The hotel chain worked diligently to restore its systems, which were fully operational again on April 8.
Attributed to the cybercriminal group Daixin, the breach has raised concerns about the potential leaking of customer records dating back to 2017. Daixin, known for its use of ransomware attacks, often employs dark web platforms to extort ransoms from victims by threatening to publish stolen information. While the gang has not provided concrete evidence of their claims, it shared a portion of the allegedly stolen files with data breach watchdog DataBreaches.net. The shared data matched the types of personal information that Omni reported as stolen.
Omni Hotels & Resorts operates numerous properties across the United States and Canada, with a workforce of over 14,000 employees.
Daixin has been on the radar of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) since October, when it began targeting businesses, including healthcare organizations, across the country. The group has previously claimed responsibility for cyberattacks on hospitals and medical facilities in the United States.
This breach serves as a reminder of the ongoing threat posed by cybercriminals, who continue to target organizations of all sizes and industries. It underscores the importance of robust cybersecurity measures to protect sensitive customer information. As businesses increasingly rely on digital systems, the need for stringent security protocols becomes paramount. Omni Hotels & Resorts is working diligently to address the breach and ensure the safety of its customers’ data moving forward.
