I spend quite a bit of time trying to buy domain names. Some of the best deals I’ve made have come on domain names I privately acquired that had not been on the market. Sometimes you have to overpay to buy a domain name that will end up looking like a steal.
Yesterday on X, I asked people about their largest offer to buy a domain name. I thought it would be interesting to see what other investors are willing to offer for an investment-quality domain name acquisition.
What is the most money you would spend to acquire a dream investment-quality domain name?

For me, the amount was $180,000 USD in 2020 – 2021 for a one word .com domain name that was and is still owned by a major corporation. I started at $63,000, raised to $100,000, then to $150,000, and finally to $180,000. This was done over the course of approximately one year. I was passed around to a couple different legal teams in this multi-national company, but the brand-team opted to keep this domain name. It still isn’t being used, but my offer wasn’t enough to move the needle.
My comfort level is below $100,000 these days, but I would increase that number for the right opportunity. To make a six figure offer, it would have to be an exceptional one word .com domain name that isn’t listed for sale anywhere and probably has never been listed for sale. Domain names can sit in my portfolio for years, so it would need to be a banger to offer that much and I’d need to have confidence that it was a great value.
What was your largest offer? No need to share the domain name but feel free to share the type of name.
