In July of last year, Meta (formerly known as Facebook) launched a social networking service to compete with Twitter, now known as X. The service was branded Threads, and the company used the Threads.net domain name for its platform. Threads.com was owned by another business, which was highlighted in Fast Company following Meta’s Threads launch.
In June of this year, the app running on Threads.com was sold to Shopify. Some people speculated that this acquisition could make the Threads.com domain name available for Meta to acquire for its Threads platform. It looks like this just happened.
According to Whois records at DomainTools, Threads.com has been acquired by Meta. More accurately, the new registrant is listed as Instagram, which is owned by Meta. Although the Threads.com domain name does not yet resolve to a functional website, it has Facebook.com nameservers. It appears the domain name changed hands within the last 24 hours or so. It transferred from GoDaddy to RegistrarSEC.
I suspect we will see Threads move to Threads.com at some point soon. I haven’t heard much about Threads in the recent past, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see this acquisition give a boost to the platform. I also wouldn’t be surprised if the sale price is reported at some point in a SEC filing since Shopify and Meta are both publicly traded companies, and I would imagine this was a very large transaction.
Kudos to Mohamed Ahmaid for spotting this and sharing on Namepros.
