Hey NamePros community,

I'm Florin I am obsessed with data.

I’ve recently completed a deep dive into the availability of 4-letter .com domains and wanted to share some key findings with fellow short domain enthusiasts. After analyzing 1.5 million possible combinations, I discovered that 770,795 of these domains are currently unregistered.
5-letter .com is next on my list.

Here are the highlights:

1. Digits are Highly Prevalent in Unregistered Domains

  • Digits ‘0’ through ‘9’ dominate the list, with ‘0’ being the most common, appearing in 4.21% of unregistered domains. This suggests that while numerical domains are less desirable, there are still opportunities for creative use in specific niches.

2. Uncommon Letters are Widely Available

  • Letters like ‘q’ and ‘z’ are frequently found, indicating their lower desirability. For example, ‘q’ is present in 88,355 domains, and ‘z’ in 86,459. If you’re looking for brandable domains with a quirky touch, these letters offer a great starting point.

3. Vowels are Scarce and Valuable

  • Vowels are less common in unregistered domains, making them a hot commodity. ‘a’ and ‘e’ are relatively more available than ‘i’, ‘o’, and ‘u’. If you prefer pronounceable or CVCV patterns, you’ll need to dig a bit deeper.

4. Repetition Patterns are Rare

  • No unregistered domains feature triple repeated characters, showing their high demand. Double repeats are rare but exist, with letters like ‘V’, ‘L’, and ‘R’ leading the way. These patterns are great for creating memorable and visually appealing domains.

5. Sequential Characters are Hard to Find

  • Domains featuring increasing sequences (e.g., ‘abc’, ‘bcd’) are very limited. ‘h’ and ‘o’ are the most common starting letters for such sequences, but overall, these patterns are in high demand and short supply.

6. Interesting Observation: ‘SCAM’ Letters are the Least Available

  • Surprisingly, ‘S’, ‘C’, ‘A’, and ‘M’ are the least common letters in unregistered domains, spelling out ‘SCAM’. Their low availability suggests they are highly sought after, perhaps for branding purposes.

7. Top Characters in Unregistered Domains

  • The most common characters include ‘0’, ‘9’, and ‘6’, each appearing in more than 3% of unregistered domains. This makes numbers a relatively untapped resource for creative combinations.

Conclusion:While the demand for vowel-inclusive and repetitive pattern domains remains high, there are still numerous opportunities with less common letters and digits.

Let’s discuss—what are your thoughts on the current state of 4-letter .com domains? Are there specific combinations you’re finding more valuable or harder to come by?

Looking forward to your insights!

— Florin
