Gulf of America: Domain now “developed” as a clothing brand store

The domain name GulfOfAmerica.com moved to a new owner recently, most likely sold by HugeDomains in recent days.

The trigger: news about incoming president Donald Trump’s intentions to rename the Gulf of Mexico, in an apparent display of racism towards Mexicans and their history.

Someone suggested that the Domain King, Rick Schwartz, might have been behind the domain’s acquisition but the rumor has not been confirmed.

Meanwhile, the domain is now in a semi-developed state, showcasing shirts and caps with the “Gulf Of America” message. It’s clearly the quickest way to monetize something like that and even to stake a claim in trademarking the term.

That being said, the new owners of the domain might be running into some trouble, as the mark GULF OF AMERICA is actually a registered trademark with the USPTO.

The application was made in 2016 and the mark was registered in 2017 with an intent to use clause; it has since been used in interstate commerce leading to its registration. Lastly, the mark’s 8 year renewal and incontestability took place early in 2024.

In other words, if the domain’s owner isn’t the trademark’s owner, we might be seeing some interesting litigation in the coming months.
