Volusia county officials in Florida implemented domain monitoring, after a scam involved the creation of emails on a similar domain name.
Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood announced the arrest of 26 year old Keith Merard, following a complex fraud scheme involving stolen Starlink satellites worth $48,000 dollars and other equipment.
Merard created email addresses on a domain similar to Volusia.org, the county’s official domain name. He then proceeded to open lines of credit with a respirator equipment vendor and Starlink, purchasing $55,000 dollars’ worth of merchandise with the intention to resell overseas for bitcoin.
His arrest took place after he turned on one of the Starlink devices that beamed out its location to the detectives working on the case.
Volusia county officials noted that the county has now implemented the use of a domain monitoring tool that alerts them if someone registers a domain similar to the county’s.
So stay away from “Volusia” domains, for now.
