ARIZONA – The Ethereum Name Service (ENS) – a decentralized, blockchain-based naming system that facilitates user-friendly names for wallet addresses – and domain registrar and web hosting company GoDaddy have partnered up to allow customers to pair Domain Name System (DNS) website domains (such as .com or .net) to an ENS (.eth) name for free which will promote use with crypto apps and wallets.

While ENS domains can be assigned to an Ethereum wallet to streamline the process of sending funds online – they are far less complicated than being forced to remember a complex alphanumeric wallet address. They are also typically incompatible with most standard web browsers.

However, the new partnership between ENS and Godaddy makes the process of pairing a DNS address to an ENS name much easier, according to ENS founder Nick Johnson.

With this milestone, we are furthering our mission to build a more secure, decentralized, and user-friendly internet,” he said in a press release. “ENS, much like DNS, is a public good and a core part of the internet infrastructure. By pairing up ENS names and GoDaddy domains, we will streamline the way users interact with web domains, blending the familiarity of the DNS with the potential of blockchain technology.”

The process works by utilizing a new section in GoDaddy’s domain management dashboard, which allows customers to pair ENS and DNS names that they own; Linking the two is free, and once it is complete you can use your DNS domain – instead of the ENS address – on supported marketplaces and exchanges.

Prior to the new partnership, ENS said that it had been possible to import DNS names over to its Ethereum-based decentralized architecture, although the very costly network fee for doing so – known as a “gas fee,” which is essentially a “toll” to use the Ethereum blockchain – made it prohibitive.

To link your own GoDaddy domain to ENS, visit the Help article. In the event your domain is in use and already hosts a website, the feature will not appear. It needs to be forwarded or parked.
