The problem is (imo) the majority of registrants don't care as they're paying $20 or something at registrars like GD or NetSol already.
They have no clue about the margin anyway.
Given the scale of .com/.net and others they operate (versign), cost should be way below $10/year. They adds nothing, no progression, no improvement.
Just cashing in.

As we’ve talked about before, Verisign — the registry behind .com and .net — is set to increase wholesale pricing on .com domains industry wide on September 1. This has become an annual trend, and we expect the .com price will steadily increase through 2030. This increase affects every registrar that offers .com domains, not just us.
As you know, here at Porkbun we always do our best to keep pricing as low as possible while offering more free services than any other registrar out there. We expect our pricing to change from $10.37 to around $11.06 at midnight ET on September 1.
