.Ai domains were the big story last year. But there’s another TLD worth looking into.

Afternic released a lot of data about how top level domains performed on its platform in 2024.

A couple of things stand out to me. First, let’s look at the top TLDs based on total dollar value:

 .com, .org, .ai

Unsurprisingly, .com dominates. But look at .ai. Two years ago, it wasn’t even in the top 20. It was #10 in 2023 and now accounted for the third-most sales value on Afternic in 2025.

Afternic also provided some data on sell-through rates and average sale prices. Their charts are missing the y-axis (probably due to GoDaddy’s overzealous investor relations team), but they give an idea of which domains perform the best.

Here’s the sell-through rate:

While .ai stands out, note the high rates of .org and .co domains. .Com is unsurprisingly lower because many marginal and poor .com domains are listed for sale.

You can see the average selling price in the chart in Afternic’s post. It shows .ai way ahead of the pack. I wish the chart showed the median rather than the average, but I suspect the median .ai sale was also very high.

What are the takeaways for domain investors? Obviously, if you could go back in time, you should have loaded up on .ai domains. It remains to be seen if it’s too late to get in with today’s frothy prices.

Look past .ai and you might come to some other conclusions. .Org looks pretty good, doesn’t it? Its registration price is on par with .com and much less than .ai and .io. It sells well, too.
