Dan.com will soon migrate accounts to Afternic before shutting down.

Afternic representatives have been open about Dan.com eventually shutting down. Today, the company published a timeline and migration plans.

As of today, new clients can’t sign up for Dan.com accounts. Shortly, a four-week migration window will begin for moving Dan.com accounts to Afternic.

Customers will be able to choose a self-migration, auto-migration, or to opt out of the migration altogether.

The migration will be most important for people who have domains at Dan.com that aren’t listed on Afternic already. In this case, the migration will involve moving the domains to Afternic.

There are a few key parts to the migration that I think are worth calling attention to:

  • While Dan’s nameservers will still work, customers will need to move their nameservers to Afternic if they wish to choose anything other than the Afternic Custom Lander
  • Existing lease-to-own transactions will be moved to Afternic in November
  • If you have active negotiations at Dan, you need to wrap them up before the migration period ends

At this point, I believe nearly all Dan functionality is now available within Afternic except for the ability to self-broker. Afternic says self-brokering is coming, but it hasn’t announced a definitive date.
